Millimetres and grams
Thickness describes the height; weight per m² describes the amount of fibre. Together they tell you density. Loose felt feels fluffy and collapses; denser felt holds its shape and resists wear better, and also costs more and weighs more in freight.
Rough guide
| Product | Typical thickness |
|---|---|
| Crafts, decoration, linings | 1–2 mm |
| Pouches, wine bags, gift bags | 2–3 mm |
| Totes, laptop sleeves | 3–5 mm |
| Coasters, placemats, desk mats | 3–5 mm |
| Baskets, storage boxes, organisers | 4–5 mm or more |
| Panels and desk screens | 9–24 mm |
What else to specify
- Weight in g/m² and tolerance
- Fibre composition
- Colour reference; melange greys differ between lots
- Stiffness: ask whether the felt is hardened or softer
- Fire class or other requirements, if any
Always check a swatch
Order a colour card and swatches before deciding. Comparing by hand takes a minute and prevents the most common order disputes.
